  1. From my point of view
Sustainable development is a concept that aims to meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs

The concept emphasizes the importance of balancing economic growth with environmental protection and social equity to ensure a better quality of life for current and future generations.

The main mile stone started from
The Brundtland Report (1987): Also known as “Our Common Future,” this report by the World Commission on Environment and Development introduced the concept of sustainable

    1-The Earth Summit (1992)

    2-The Millennium Development Goals (2000-2015)

    3-The Sustainable Development Goals (2015-present)

these milestones have helped to promote a more integrated and sustainable approach to development that takes into account the long-term well-being of both current and future generations.

    • I agree that summits, reports and goals have been put in place but I can hardly consider them milestones since the general public is in the bliss on these and hence disengaged.

I believe the real milestone can be reached once everyone starts to play a role.

  2. I think nature needs to be left alone with no intervention from the human side, as all we do right now is not having a clear vision for the kind of crisis that will damage the upcoming generations, this can be done through: a true legislative decrees.

Realizing that the history of environment sustainability is linked to behaviour patterns and lifestyles dating back to the 19th century was quite a revelation for me today. Personally, I thought it’s a newly developed field only in the 21st century.

Some of todays takeaways that registered with me are:
    1. The environment concepts by Gifford Pinchot (conservationist) versus John Muir (preservationist) helps one categorize many environment practises objectively and scientifically. It helps focus the mindset and analyze policies and practises accordingly.

    2. Understanding the 3Es model – economy, ecology and equity. And even though this model seems like the ultimate solution it still manages to offer conflicts.
    Development conflict: Equity Ecology
    Property conflict: Equity Economy
    Resource conflict: Economy Ecology

    3. LULU terminology: Locally Unwanted Land Use! Example of freeways and waste dumps likely resulting in health hazards, a drop in home values, loss of greenery, etc.

    4. Comprehending that pending or overdue development projects stay open due to political benefits was another discovery. In fact this shouldn’t have a discovery since this we all know that economy and politics work hand in hand … and yet 😉

To wrap up the history of sustainable development is a whole new space that I’m keen to delve into 🙂

  5. From my limited view; I can see the high demand of ppl was the trigger of change in each key milestone during the environmental history, where each generation wasn’t aware with the future impact on the next generations – for sure the Industrial Revolution was a key milestones followed by mass demands to fulfill the Rich to get richer approach – I consider NOW is a turning point where we realized that we are in real unreverse danger specially with the acceleration in technology & AI expected dominance

    • So you’re saying we are aware of our impact on the future. Hence, your proposal is learn from the past and call on scientists, scholars, organisations, institutes, private and public sectors to raise a flag and alert people today of their impact on future generations.

If we do that no one can look back on history and blame us;)
