With regards to the Master Plan of the Pink Lake City in Senegal that was presented to you. In one page, indicate if you are (WITH) or (AGAINST) the decision of building such a new city. Build your argument based on what you have learned throughout the class and through your participation in the sustainability debate about the city’s master plan. Your narrative e should reflect your own views not the views of role you played in the debate. Feel free to use any references used in the class or beyond.
In regard to this development, I am for Pink lake city being built but I also respect that the current plan is not perfect. I am for the city being built as it incorporates each aspect of sustainability. The business district incorporates economic sustainability, the green spaces incorporate environmental sustainability, and the wellness element, green spaces and diverse residential areas incorporate social sustainability. On paper this development will inhabit and enable a functioning society. However, there are some significant downfalls to this development that would be easily altered in order to make the development more successful. The residential areas only incorporate mid and high class housing and there is no mention of affordable housing. The location of these areas is also an issues. For instance the high class residential areas face out over the ocean whereas the mid class residential areas are in a less prestigious areas which could create social isolation of the different classes and does not promote social cohesion between classes. Furthermore the green spaces are very thin and so do not promote social mixing as they are not constructed with the social viewpoint in mind. There is also a significant segregation between each sector of the city with very clear boundaries for each sector of wellness, business, sport etc. I feel that a more integrated approach of incorporating each of the underlying concepts of the city into each other would enable more of a sense of cohesion and would also make the city replicate more of a usual city. This would enable easier use for the inhabitants and would encourage more people to move to the city.

I agree with the project because it has a good ideas and objectives however there is too much segregated development and should be altered in certain areas to be a better or have a higher chance of being a successful project, the areas that should be altered are the area plan and perhaps the development stages with the 5th stage and 3rd stage being swapped (the businesses could attract recent graduates with schemes first before the education development is completed). The green corridors from the lake are also along the major roads of the project and therefore does not maximise the potentialof the green space, there is also no mention of sustainable transport infrastructure for this project from what i have seen.I am for this project because it offers improved education systems, international integration in regards to culture and investment while maintaning a balance between environmental and economic development. I also think the location is beneficial as they are maximizing its benefits while maintaing the pink lakes situation, the implementationof these plans will have to be heavily reviewed to ensure it will be successful and benefit the people who will be not only residents but visitors to this city. I feel they should also have further proposals to benefit senegal and the Senegalese people in the future. If this project was to fail after development the result could be catastrophic to Senegal as a whole.

I agree with the master plan, and I like how the plan has been separated into 5 areas that priorities different sectors (education, wellness, business, sports and art, and African culture) which covers a broad range of objectives that are needed to create a successful development. However, I think they could further input or elaborate on what the development has to offer for the local residents with different economic backgrounds. And maybe less focus on bringing in international tourism and more for inside the country.

In terms of the Pink Lake City, I am with this development. This is due to all the factors are considered, this factors are environmental, economic, and social. In terms of the environmental elements there are green corridors, green space has been put in place, along with protecting areas e.g. the pink lake. These are good elements to have in a city as it can promote biodiversity and increase wildlife in the area. Although, these do benefit the environment it could cause lack of social cohesion as the green tunnels can cause them to become dangerous during the dark periods of the day as there is no civilisation around.
With is, it can also improve people’s mental health which is a social aspect that will be beneficial for the residents. Socially the city provides wellness, healthcare and opportunities for jobs and high levels of education. This is beneficial for the area as the people living there are able to experience high wellness opportunities, which will in turn benefit there performance at work as they will be able to work more efficiently as they have access to good health care and wellness experiences. On the other hand, the healthcare that is offered Is private, meaning that payment will have to be used to access this. This may not always be a option for people living in the area as they may not have the funds to do so, therefore this is a downfall for the city. The residual is also segregated with upper class in one area and middle class In another. This again is not promoting social sustainability or cohesion as areas of this city are segregated.
In terms of the business perspective, there are areas for growth in people career and developing further with international connection. This will help the city grow economically and can bring stakeholders to the area. within this city, there is also access to high levels of education.

I would myself with the realisation of this city model. in fact, i think that all the elements that were covered in this lecture are important and should be present in all cities nowadays. the element of greenery is certainly very important, especially in these years because of the climate problem, so it is fondamental to push towards a focus on this issue, and i like the ideas that could be proposed. Furthermore, the great attention that is also given to the African cultural aspect, in my opinion one of the most beautiful and interesting in the world, and also to the other cultures that are established in this context. It could bring great incomes for the country that could be used for the smaller project to benefict the community.
Overall, it is a comprehensive project, but I think it is at the same time too idealistic and it will be difficult to successfully maintain a balanced situation. It looks to much forced into that context, that it might not fit very well in it and that ti would take a lot of effort to keep it successful. It is important that the context in which a certain project is meant to be located needs to be more considered, as well as the possible consequences that a project of this dimensions might have on the current population.

I believe the Master Plan of the Pink Lake City in Senegal should take form to create this new city in West Africa.
The project will enhance the city’s current cultural background through the creation of the “Stage 5 African Cultural City”, where the mix of other cultures, such as European and Islamic, is encouraged to form new ideas and gain new knowledge.
Multiple parts of the proposal also focus on the economic abilities that the area could have improved if the project was to take place. The array of features included in the “Western Africa Business City” and the “Brain City”, such as the accessibility to education hubs/schools, and international organisations area, will provide for an influx of knowledge, communication and income into the city.
Equally important is the protection and enhancement of the natural environment, which this proposal caters for. The “Wellness City” has put the citys environment at the forefront by ensuring it is protected in terms of being used for the residents.
If the project takes place, there may be issues in relation to its success and ability to thrive. The plan may need some changes made to ensure full advantage of the benefits the proposal could bring to the area. One alteration that may enhance the different stages so that they can each benefit from one another is to encourage more integration of the areas. With the current layout, different areas serve different purposes, and this distance, both physically and figuratively, may reduce the symbiotic relationships between them.

The project has many benefits there is a healthy balance between different aspects of economic and social systems. The project has the benefit of being planned for continual growth providing links between education and markets without the sacrifice of training a workforce to have them leave for more developed nations.
The utopian view of the city relies on little to no competition from neighbouring cities and as has been shown in London shows a centralised economic can build a reliance the project if the city if there is a failure to expand economic anchor for the surrounding areas. The failure to build on the success could lead to a state of economic and social regression for the area as the failure to provide the growth into more of Africa could leave businesses without the potential business the project will be an expensive waste of money.
Growing international links with other countries would be key to the success but letting in international influence could be a problem as all the countries would want something out of the country, investment from external governments could lead to the whole of Senegal being indebted to a foreign government and potentially loosing out on potential wealth as resources would have to be lost to foreign entities with very little benefit to the project or the country.
